What with Mr Gordon Ramsey himself dropping by for a hawker cook-off, Jamie’s Italian opening to a huge amount of press, and new restaurants/bars/cafés opening every week, the message to the world is clear – Singapore is a foodie haven and constantly upping the gastro-scene ante . This has really encouraged Singapore residents to refine their palates and there is a constant thirst for the next big thing on the foodie scene.


Enter South Australia, home to award-wining wines, hundreds of locally crafted beers, as well as  fabulously over-sized markets teeming with fresh, locally grown, organic produce. In just about every corner of South Australia you’ll find something to whet your appetite. Hot spots include the city of Adelaide for its vibrant restaurant scene; the Barossa for a circuit of its cellar doors and do-it-yourself wine blending experiences; and the Eyre Peninsula, where you can spend a few days driving along a coastline few internationals have even heard of let alone seen, tasting some of the freshest, just-caught seafood straight from the sea.

Mmmmm, hungry for more?

The best time to head Down Under is in October this year, with a number of food festivals taking place all around the state. From the Ceduna Oysterfest on the Eyre Peninsula, Coonawarra’s flagship Cabernet Sauvignon Celebrations, and Adelaide’s Cheesefest; it sure is a struggle to pick any one event to attend.

Can’t make it in October? Head down in August for the Barossa Gourmet Weekend. With 20 celebrated wineries showcasing a range of the finest wines  and complemented by the best of local produce, this makes a great weekend getaway to Australia’s wine capital.

An alternative, is to make your way Down Under in April/ May for Tasting Australia, a week-long extravaganza. Although usually graced by a number of Australia’s bigwigs in the culinary industry, the creative directors insist that next year is “not about personalities, it’s about being driven by produce and authenticity.” Translation: they want to bring YOU much closer to the heart of local produce-crafters with this ‘Origins’ theme.
