Only 7km long and 1km wide at its narrowest, Boracay is a tiny island with a big reputation. It’s the beach superstar of the Philippines; its heavenly white sands have graced the cover of every travel brochure going. Awards have been lavished and champagne has flowed since it became known to the wider world in the 80s.

And it would be impossible to say that it’s not deserved: there are long reaches of powdery sands, soft under feet, fringed by palms swaying in the breeze as if they’ve sampled the local cocktails.

The island’s ecosystems are remarkably lush and thriving; both in the unspoilt jungles inland and the technicolor coral reefs lying off the coast. But don’t forget Borcay is somewhere that knows how to enjoy itself. The clink of ice in a martini glass is as much part of the island’s soundtrack as the lapping of waves on the shore.
